Scholarship Stories

Brenda G.
Major:
M.S. Library Science

COI: What is your current major, degree plan, and professional concentration?

Brenda: I am currently working on a master’s degree in library science.

COI: Why did you apply for this scholarship and what made you think you were a good match for it?

Brenda: This is my second go-around in graduate school, as I am a former school psychologist. Pursuing a career in library science is something that I am passionate about and have always wanted to do, but furthering my education has gotten quite expensive. I applied for this scholarship to take some of the financial burden off of my family and am so grateful to have received this award.

COI: What are some highlights of your time in the program so far? Do you want to shout out to any specific courses or professors who have helped you along the way?

Brenda: I am about halfway through my graduate program, and my favorite course has been Literature for Youth with Shylo Brandenburg. The course material has been excellent, the assignments have been practical for a career in library science, and instructor feedback and communication have been wonderful. I now have a newfound appreciation for youth literature! I am also very grateful for Dr. Agnes Pearcy who has been a great mentor and always willing to help.

COI: What are your career plans after graduation?

Brenda: I am not entirely sure what specialized field will be the best fit for me, but I decided to focus on a General Program of Study so that I can gain knowledge and skills to be successful across various areas. I think can see myself working in either an academic or public library and look forward to serving my community in the future.

COI: Can you share any big successes you’ve had or obstacles you’ve overcome?

Brenda: My biggest obstacle has been finding the courage to leave my previous career and start anew in the library science field. I am so thankful to have gotten this opportunity and have loved the experience so far.
