The Health Informatics Lecture Series was first launched in Fall 2019, providing guest participants the opportunity to explore relevant topics in the field. 

“The Health Informatics Lecture Series is a modern take on the successful Medical Informatics Symposiums held in the 1990s and early 2000s and brings experts in the profession to engage with our students,” said Dr. Ana D. Cleveland, Regents Professor, Sarah Law Kennerly Endowed Professor, and director of the Health Informatics Program.

Invited speakers have included renowned industry and academic professionals who have presented on a range of pertinent topics in health sciences librarianship and health informatics. Lectures are held each academic year using Zoom - two in the Fall and two in the Spring semesters. The presentations are open to UNT students, faculty, staff, and to the public.

The University of North Texas, College of Information, Department of Information Science invites you to the Health Informatics Lecture Series for Spring 2024.

Title of the Presentation: Participatory Design of Health Infographics for Patients, Research Participants, Caregivers, and the Community

Speaker: The lecture will be delivered by Adriana Arcia, PhD, RN, FAAN
Professor, Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, University of San Diego                                    

She has been the principal investigator for multiple research projects that have developed tailored health infographics using participatory design methods. Her research has dealt with topics such blood pressure, mental health symptoms, asthma and dementia caregiving, COVID-19 testing and vaccination. Most recently, she was MPI with Dr. Suzanne Bakken on Reaching Communities through the Design of Information Visualizations (ReDIVis) Toolbox for Return of COVID-19 Results funded by National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR).

AI in Medicine: from PubMed Search to Machine Diagnosis

Speaker: The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Zhiyong Lu, Senior Investigator, Deputy Director for Literature Search, National Center of Biotechnology Information (NCBI), National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Dr. Lu will present the work on developing large-scale, machine-learning based tools for better understanding scientific text in the biomedical literature. He will demonstrate their uses in some real-world applications such as improving PubMed searches, scaling up data curation with PubTator, and taming COVID-19 pandemic paper tsunami in LitCovid.

Developing and Deploying Large Language Models in Healthcare 
Speaker:  John D. Halamka, M.D., M.S, President of the Mayo Clinic Platform
Bio: John D. Halamka, M.D., M.S., president of the Mayo Clinic Platform at the Mayo Clinic. He is trained in emergency medicine and medical informatics. Dr. Halamka has been developing and implementing healthcare information strategy and policy for more than 25 years. He brings together solution developers, data partners and healthcare service providers to transform healthcare. Prior to his appointment at Mayo Clinic, he was chief information officer at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he served governments, academia and industry worldwide. As the International Healthcare Innovation Professor at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Halamka helped the George W. Bush administration, the Obama administration and other governments around the world plan their healthcare information strategies.
