COI: Why did you apply for the scholarship?
Weston: I have been fortunate enough to receive two scholarships during my MS Library
Sciences graduate program at UNT. In Fall 2020, I was awarded the Non-Traditional
Student Book Award. In Fall 2021, I received a scholarship endowed by COI alumni.
I make it a point to apply for scholarships at every opportunity, especially if the
university or department promotes a general scholarship application so that I can
apply for many all at once. This usually serves me well, because the department is
helpful in finding scholarships that apply to my academic career and personal situation.
I apply for scholarships to assist with tuition and other institutional costs, as
any and all financial assistance helps reduce the need for student loans.
COI: How has this scholarship helped you reach your goals?
Weston: I have experienced much academic and professional growth while at UNT, which
can partly be attributed to financial assistance. I consider myself extremely fortunate
to have the opportunity to further my education and apply those skills to my chosen
profession. Scholarships not only assist with school-related costs, but they also
serve as inspiration and incentive to continue higher education and maintain good
grades.
COI: Give us one or two highlights about what you have accomplished so far as a student
in the program.
Weston: Throughout the MS-LS program, I have been introduced to methodologies and
practices that have helped me in my current profession. As an archival reference associate,
I often draw upon skills involving patron interaction, professional research, user
engagement, statistical reporting, and much more. Additionally, I get to use my knowledge
of professional collaboration because of my increased involvement with job-related
committees and professional teams. I also have the frequent opportunity to host classes
and tours in which I address archival procedures and standards. This is one of my
favorite things to do because I enjoy witnessing increased interest in historical
materials. Users often become fascinated with why and how archival items are handled,
stored, and preserved. Being a scholarship recipient has enabled me to continue my
education and meet the qualifications required of information professionals, so that
I may work in a field that I enjoy.
