COI: What is your current major, degree plan, and professional concentration?
Rachel: My current degree program is a Master of Science in Library Science with a
School Librarian Certificate.
COI: Why did you apply for this scholarship and what made you think you were a good
match for it?
Rachel: I applied for the COI/IS Melba S Harvill Endowed Scholarship because I felt
I would be a good fit since I met the award hour and GPA requirements. I am so grateful
to the Department of Information Science and Dr. and Mr. Harvill for offering this
scholarship.
COI: What are some highlights of your time in the program so far? Do you want to shout
out to any specific courses or professors who have helped you along the way?
Rachel: I am finishing up my first year in the program, and it has been a great experience!
Each class that I have taken has helped me to solidify that I made the right choice
to apply to UNT and earn my degree at this institution. The professors are all fantastic
experts in their fields and are very helpful and understanding.
COI: What are your career plans after graduation?
Rachel: I am still undecided about definite plans post-graduation; however, I am very
excited to see what will be out there in the field of library science to see what
might be the best fit!
COI: Can you share any big successes you've had or obstacles you've overcome?
Rachel: I think the biggest obstacles that I have had to overcome as a graduate student
have been taking classes while also working full time as a high school English teacher
and being a widowed parent to my two-year-old son. However, this past year has shown
me that with the support of friends, family, and my professors that I can truly do
anything I set my mind to.
