William “Stony” Evans, M.S. Library Science 2020

Public service has been Stony’s life. Equally, education has always been important to him. He started as a middle school band director with both a BA and MA in Music and later transferred to the school library after getting his Master of Library and Information Technologies from the University of Central Arkansas. After a 25-year career in public schools, he decided to retire from the public schools and keep working in the Army National Guard while also attaining his Master of Library Science from UNT. He knew that he wanted to go into public libraries, and he needed an ALA-accredited program to be considered for the role. He continued to work as Commander of the 106th Army Band while he finished his degree. He is now 5 months into a position as Operations Manager for Cross County Library in Wynne, Arkansas and working as adjunct faculty for McDaniel College and still continuing his national guard service. In his current role as Operations Manager for a community of 8,000, he coordinates the programming at the library for all ages, manages 6 employees, works on collection development, and does the Storytime programming. Stony says that the skills he got in the UNT College of Information Library Science program that he leans on are information organization, cataloging, customer service orientation and customer experience. Stony says, “libraries are magical places because education opens doors and whether it is a physical or digital piece of information, it has the power to provide access to knowledge.” He chose UNT’s Library Science program due to its visibility and reputation and especially based on the fact that it was an ALA- accredited program. We are proud of our alumnus, Stony, and thankful for his service.
