Abstract
This will be a 20-minute talk in two parts -- the first part is a whirlwind tour of the current hot research areas in Natural Language Processing (NLP), with a special focus on popular topics close to research areas in Linguistics, such as semantics, syntax, and language documentation. The second part focuses on possible career paths outside of academia for researchers with a background in linguistics, based on my own experience as a student who “jumped ship” from Linguistics to Computer Science to industry research.

There should be ample time for discussion, questions and/or deeper dives into specific topics after the talk.
