Assistive Technologies

Over one billion people – approximately 15 percent of the world’s population – live with some form of disability and face a wide range of barriers, including access to information, education, healthcare and a lack of job opportunities.

The scientific community has recently been mindful of the importance of people with disabilities being able to access Information and Communications Technology (ICT).  The resulting methods and technology are called e-accessibility: tools and means that allow users – regardless of their culture, language, age, disabilities – to reach information and technologies like the Internet independently.  Furthermore, ICT can offer great opportunities for social inclusion and other ways for people with disabilities to improve their quality of life. 

Dr. Mohamed Jemni will cover the basic concepts of e-accessibility, focusing on Web content accessibility as well as presenting the current projects of the research laboratory Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication & Génie Electrique (LaTICE) at the University of Tunis focused on improving e-accessibility of people with disabilities:

  • Improving accessibility of deaf community by the use of ICT and sign language 
  • Development of an e-learning environment for students with visual disabilities

Mohamed Jemni


Dr. Mohamed Jemni is a Professor of Computer Science and Educational Technologies at the University of Tunis, Tunisia. He is the Head of Research Laboratory Technologies of Information and Communication & Electrical Engineering ( and Director of Information and Communications Technology at ALECSO.   He has published more than 200 papers in international journals and conferences about ICT, E-accessibility, E-learning, and Entrepreneurship Education for international organizations such as UNESCO, ITU, and ALECSO.  His current research interests include educational technologies, Online learning, Mobile learning, E-accessibility, Grid and High-Performance Computing. He is an advisor of G3ict—the Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies—an advocacy initiative launched by the United Nations.
